Moments after an awesome Thanksgiving dinner with my Fiancee’s family, we find ourselves looking through the store ads. We found some good deals but we decided not to go line up anywhere. Her little cousin called and wanted to get the 26″ LCD TV from Target and asked us to go with them. We said “Sure”… not knowing of the adventure that was to follow. Here is the approximate time line of the events Friday morning.
- 1:00 AM – left the house with her cousins for Target
- 1:30 AM – got to Target but it opens at 6AM
- 1:31 AM – Saw a Wal-mart across the way
- 1:35 AM – Drove Past Wal-mart and it was already open
- 1:36 AM – saw some great deals at Wal-mart
- 1:45 AM – Talked to a Wal-mart employee and got ourselves a ticket for a 42″ LCD 1080p HDTV. Prices don’t change until 5AM
- 1:50 AM – Figuring we are for sure to get the 42″ TV at Wal-mart we decided to camp out AT Target.
- 2:00 AM – 6th in line at Target and 25 degrees out, it was freaking cold! see in the picture >>
- 4:00 AM – spotted a cutter, and we decided to let her know she was cutting in line
- 4:30 AM – Target employees spotted entering the store.
- 4:31 AM – Fiancee and her cousins in line at Target.
- 4:35 AM – I went to Wal-mart to fall in line to pay for the TV.
- 5:00 AM – Prices change at Wal-mart and the line SLOWLY moves up.
- 6:00 AM – Target Opens.

- 6:15 AM – Fiancee call me asking if I’m done because they are done and got three 26″ TV’s for $299.99 each.
- 6:16 AM – Still in line at Wal-mart . Line not moving. Not all the prices changed at Wal-mart’s registers, manually checking each scanned item.
- 7:00 AM – Paid for my TV. 42″ LCD 1080p HDTV for only $600 =)
- 7:30 AM – Got back home to sleep.
It was a gruelling six and a half hours, probably would not do it ever again. The pain and suffering of waiting in the cold and standing in line for hours was bearable. The stink from the other people in line was not. I wish the stores would set up B.O. alarms… seriously.
Was it worth it to wait line to get the discount? There is no real way of quantifying this but we were already there and most importantly her little cousin was able to get the TV he wanted for his mom. Evertyhing else that we got was gravy.

Eric, you are crazy for going out in that madness. I did it like two years ago because I was just curious to see what was going on. Man, that is not for me, but I am not a big shopper. I pretty much got everything that I wanted….just bought a new phone the other day, so I am set. I could use a new laptop, but that ain’t about to happen unless I go bananas on these site flips over the next few weeks.
Anyway, glad to hear you got a great deal and your little cousin is happy!

Wow! Sounds like you all got some killer deals … this is the first year in … 13+ years that I didn’t do the “middle of the night” shopping thing on Black Friday and I couldn’t help but wonder what I missed. We went out at about 10:00 a.m. and got a couple of things … hope I don’t pay a bunch more closer to Christmas. It was fun to live vicariously

Actually the same time spent waiting in line, could be used to work, and the money that you get from work, you could probably use for the bulk of paying for that television. Okay that’s a little exaggerated, but given the craziness, I might have preferred to work over madness.
@Freddi Taylor – Thanks man! I’m glad to hear you are set! I’m pretty sure a new laptop is in the horizon!
@Suzanne Franco – Girl, this was my first year doing this… you have 12 years of experience on me! No wonder you da Blogging IDOL!!!

@El Monte Guy – I would prefer work too but i don’t think there was a job opp from 2am – 6am that day for me to apply for… =) Thanks for dropping by!
I was just thinking … that when I used to live in San Diego it was much easier because of the climate … it wasn’t freezing! It’s usually in the 40’s here in Texas and some years I’ve brought my thermos with hot chocolate. When my kids were younger I’d go through the ads and circle with huge marker … write out the route from store to store … and use a time schedule. Wow! I was really into it. LOL. Actually 3 years ago we had a house fire (in October) so that year it was important because I lost all electronics and needed computers, cameras, video camera … everything … and I got some great prices thank God! I’m sure I’ll be back at it next year and we’ll see how I do. *huGs* S
