If you are reading this and you still do not have a Twitter account please get yours now. Twitter names have been going pretty fast and much like how dot com domain names were being snatched right off the sky back in the day, you should take advantage of the timing and register your names, business, Blog, Web Site, Club, Group etc.
A good example of this is myself. When I heard about Twitter earlier this year I immediately tried to register @EricTan -unfortunately it was already taken by another Eric Tan. I guess my name is really really common. So I lost out on branding my name.
Speaking of losing out, a good example would be Nissan.com, the car maker vs the computer guy. Read the story about how Nissan the car maker failed to register the domain name before Mr. Uzi Nissan and the car maker tried to bully their way to get Mr. Uzi Nissan to relinquish this domain name. I did mention “Tried”, because Uzi still owns the domain name. Good For him. Just imagine the traffic Nissan.com is getting.
If you run into the problem where someone already has your Blog/Site’s Twitter name registered, do not fear the Problogger has the answer here, at Twitip.com. After reading his post I immediately registered the names of my other sites. Bloggers are already using Twitter to “socialize” with other bloggers. I use Twitter to update my Facebook account too, you can use the Twitter Facebook Application to sync your tweets with your status updates.
Who should take advantage of Twitter? There will be ways to use Twitter that are still unknown to us right now, but the following entities should be able to use it as an added value:
Site Flippers: Registering the site that you are flipping on twitter will give the site additional value and leverage. Keep in mind that registering on Twitter is free, so why not sweeten the deal by packaging a Twitter account with the site. The person buying the flipped site would be able to use a customized social media tool.
Schools/Campus: Schools and Universities should also be able to find a use for Twitter. It can be use to announce that schools are closed because of weather or whatever. Update parents on registering or paying tuition and fees. It can also be used to feature faculty and staff.
Corporate Sites/Blogs: Twitter gives corporations and businesses another outlet to market their products, services and mission – in a much softer “Social” way. We all know what happens when all we tweet are links to a site, your followers un-follow you.
Groups/Clubs: Social groups can definitely use Twitter to update your members with a “Whats new!” tweet or “Event Update” tweet. Facebook and Myspace groups can take advantage of this Social Networking Tool.
Who else can use Twitter? Scroll down and leave us your two cents.

Duuuude! Registering the name of the website on twitter is such a great idea! I’m just about to go live with a flip and you know that every bit of strategy count! I feel lucky I came here
But apart from my flips, I have registered a bunch of twitter accounts and secured my domains!
Great tip! I’ve always gone by wahmsuzanne on most forums/social sites … so I just went and got suzannefranco too … never know right? LOL *SmiLes* Suzanne
P.S. and I also love the tip to register it with each site … and for flipping
@Ben @Suzanne – I’m glad y’all liked the tip. It’s all about branding yourself right…. =)
Haha that’s funny, I hadn’t heard about the Nissan guy. This is a good reminder, Twitter is getting more and more popular, and soon they’ll be valuable. I wonder if people will start being able to sell twitter names. I wonder if I should start setting up popular twitter names, and then seeing if I can sell them. That’s an interesting idea. Some great tips on this post, thanks for sharing.
