Last week we talked about Tipping from the point of view of those who Tip generously. Today we will delve into the second part of the debate. -The flip side of Part 1, those who are “Not so Fond of Tipping.”
I talked to a few friends about this topic and came up with another bunch of different answers, just like in Part 1. Like this one from my very technical friend:
“Well I do tip. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a cheap [guy]. But I believe that we should only tip if we got the service we wanted. The definition of tip says it all – it is a PRESENT of money in exchange for SERVICE. So usually their tip depends on how satisfied I am with my dining experience as whole. If they didn’t do [anything] that would constitute a 20% tip then I dont give them 20%. In fact if the service deserves 5% tip I will give 5%. They should not EXPECT to get it automatically, they should EARN the cash just like the rest of us.”
Well I looked up the word “tip” for the definition and like he said::

1. a small present of money given directly to someone for performing a service or menial task; gratuity: He gave the waiter a dollar as a tip.
Another friend of mine gets his point across:
“I do not believe in tipping automatically. Some people they just tip blindly, like their a big shot. Please… If I get service, I tip, If i dont get service, I don’t tip. Simple as that. I do not think throwing away my hard earned money will do me any good. Majority of these people DO NOT claim ALL their tip money on their Income Tax anyway. So how is that helping America? And most of these people are illegal. I go to a restaurant to eat and enjoy a meal, not to worry about who gets paid what.”
I understand it is customary to tip between 15% – 20% here in the United States. But that’s just what it is, a custom. In some countries it is customary NOT to tip, but if you want to leave one, you can, but you break the custom. Personally I have a system I follow to figure out how much to tip.
Anyway what I do is I rate the service that I get. I used to be a secret shopper and followed some guidelines but I made up my own. I give the service points that will hopefully add up to 20% or more:
- +5 pts if they greet us with a smile. =)
- +2 pts everytime they fill my glass with my beverage (before I start choking). I drink a lot of water and can sometime consume 8 glassess in one sitting. That’s just me of course.
- -1 pt everytime I have to REALLY look for them to get something that I need, like water.
- -1 pt if whoever I’m with complains about the service.
- -1 pt everytime the server makes me feel uncomfortable. Like rushing me for my order, inappropriate comment or gesture etc.
- -1 pt for brown nosing or kissing **s.
This is how I do it. You may think otherwise but I think my system is fair. It’s actually almost like a Blog Contest. I mean try it if you want, to me it just makes more sense to do it this way than just throwing money around. But that’s just me.

I only tip 10 percent, and 15% during dinner time. I mean, If I could get away with it why not (i know i know I’m cheap)? The only reason I leave a tip, it’s because I don’t want to get chased down by the server as I am about to walk out the door, coz I didn’t leave any tip. I am sure you’ve heard a lot of stories like that. I know some people that tips servers at buffets. Give me a break…It’s a freaking buffet…you get your own food for crying out loud…oh well.

I chuckled about the drink refill thing! Ken drinks a lot with his meals and to keep the peace I find myself constantly looking for the waiter to get him more drink. I think that’s where the points will not work in their favor! LOL But I do agree that they should earn their tip. I go to a hair salon that does not allow tipping (they are all on salary) … and truthfully I won’t switch because of it. I always felt so obligated to give so much … after spending a small fortune to get a service in the first place.
